There's no single Am7. The same four notes live all over the neck, and each voicing sounds different — some open, some tight, some ringing.

barre    movable, one shape up and down
drop-2   spread, for jazz and solo playing
compact  tight clusters, for funk and r&b

Why it matters

Voice leading is the difference between chords that connect and chords that just sit next to each other.
