The first chord to learn isn't the one you think

Everyone learns C or G first. They're wrong. Start with the shape that teaches you the neck, not the one that sounds good in a campfire song.

Start with a moveable shape

A power chord or a barre E-shape teaches you the note names on the low two strings — the map everything else hangs on.

The payoff

Once you know where the notes are, every other chord is just a shape on top of that grid.
